A Sociological Study of the Lived Experience of Women who have Experienced Violence of Tehran City

Purpose: Violence is one of the oldest social traumatic experiences that have many negative effects and consequences on various aspects of individuals' personalities. A sociological study of violence, especially among women can greatly contribute to a better understanding of this phenomenon and provide solutions to reduce it. As a result, the present study aimed to conduct with the aim of sociological study of the lived experience of women who have experienced violence of Tehran city. Methodology: The present research was a qualitative study with using a phenomenological strategy. The population of the present research was all women who have experienced violence of Tehran city, which according to the principle of theoretical saturation number of 45 people of them were interviewed with using purposive sampling method. Therefore, the instruments of the present research were included a demographic information form and a semi-structured interview, which its validity was confirmed by the triangulation method and its reliability was obtained by the agreement coefficient between the two coders 0.73. To analyze the data of the present research was used the themes analysis method in MAXQDA software. Findings: The results of this study indicated that the age of the interviewees was 35.50 years and 40% (18 people) of them had a diploma. Also, for the sociological study of the lived experience of women who have experienced violence of Tehran city were identified nine sub themes in five main themes, including physical violence (with two sub themes of beating with fists and kicks and throwing things), psychological violence (with three sub themes of humiliation, indifference and disregard and man's coercive control), threats (with one sub theme of threats), verbal violence (with two sub themes of using foul words and swearing and commanding and domineering speech) and shouting (with one sub theme of shouting). Conclusion: Experiencing violence against women has many negative effects and consequences and based on the identified themes in this research should be designed and developed strategies to reduce violence against women.
